The Need for Good Lighting with Wood Lathes
There is no reason why a wood lathe cannot benefit from good lighting because it is both easy and affordable to supply it today. Continue reading and see just how beneficial good lighting can be for turners and why you cannot do without it.
Why Is Good Lighting Necessary?
The first reason good lighting is a strict necessity is because of safety. Consider that a wood lathe is a dangerous machine to operate if you cannot see everything. Other reasons why good lighting is necessary are as follows:
- Helps with sanding and finishing
- Prevents distractions
- Helps you with turning
- Fights against fatigue
Good lighting affects the overall outcome of any turning job simply because you will be able to easily see what you are doing from start to finish.
Lighting Alternatives
There are some lighting alternatives that you have for your wood lathe and they are:
- Sunlight
- Overhead fluorescent
- Incandescent lighting
As far as sunlight is concerned, some even take their lathes outside during warm clear weather months. If taking the lathe outside is not desirable, mounting it next to a south-facing window (or any window) might be. However, when the sun is not up, you will need good quality shop lighting provided by the other two alternatives.
It doesn’t matter if the lighting you choose is wired through the walls or plugged in with an extension cord. Portable lighting connected with an extension cord gives you choices but in the long run you probably won’t be moving your lathe. Thus, hardwired lighting will be better in the latter case.
Considerations
Any lighting that you choose to mount near your wood lathe must be protected against the event of projectiles. A projectile could not only shatter a bulb but put the operator in danger from flying glass. Thus, you will find quality shop lighting is protected by a screen or other protective cover.
Keep in mind that wood lathes are both heavy and potentially hazardous. One of the best ways to stay safe and focused while turning is with good lighting. It is inexpensive so there really is no reason not to invest in it.
